About Rick's Pen Shop

My goal is to create fine works of art in the pens that I create. Whether utilizing exotic woods or acrylics, I want the holder of the pen to be proud of the creation in their hand. It’s important to me how the piece feels to the ultimate user. For me pen making embodies the technical and artistic image of the genre. The genre may run the gamut from simple ballpoint twist pens to themed pens utilizing specially cast blanks.

Although pen making has been recently my primary passion, I also enjoy the creativity provided in creating other types of wood-oriented projects such as bottle stoppers and cutting boards. The creative process requires a visualization of the process. For me, that encompasses the coupling of the proper pen kit with a complimentary exotic wood or acrylic blank. Final production elements are also very important and not necessarily limited to the finishes used.

Born, raised and a lifelong resident of beautiful California, I’ve been actively involved in woodworking and pen making for a number of years. My education in woodworking is one of practical experience.

Whether it’s been studying the many professional publications related to pen turning and woodworking or the latest techniques presented on YouTube, I never tire of the depth and breadth of possibilities that woodworking offers, technically and creatively.

My work product has been purchased by enthusiastic buyers at a number of craft fairs in the Sacramento and Loomis/Roseville area and has included custom orders from as far away as New York City.
